Sustainable rural development is a major challenge for Lao PDR and agriculture is expected to contribute substantially to economic growth over the next decade. Yet, Lao PDR’s economy is already experiencing the impacts of climate variability and change with the majority of population remaining highly vulnerable to climate hazards and risks
The Sustainable Rural Infrastructure and Watershed Management Sector Project (SRIWMP) will improve rural livelihoods based on sustainable and inclusive development within Lao PDR. The project will: (i) upgrade productive rural infrastructure (PRI) to be climate resilient, efficient, and sustainable; (ii) improve land use management and access to land ownership in selected watersheds; and (iii) improve institutional arrangements and capacity for good agriculture practices and sustainable watershed management.
Deforestation, Watershed degradation and effects of climate change will lead to an increase in hydro-meteorological driven damage and destruction. This puts the performance of past and future ADB PRI investments and the associated benefits at high risk.
TThe EO4SD project have in dialogue with ADB and IWMI identified three activities with added-value potential. The activities aim to demonstrate in different ways how Earth Observation (EO) can support SRIWMP and similar ADB projects, including:
